Barbara Bush, the former first lady and matriarch of a Republican political empire, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 92 in her Houston home. Barbara, the wife of the 41st president and mother of the 43rd commander in chief, announced on April 15 that she “decided not to seek additional medical treatment” in favor of “comfort care.” Barbara, who celebrated her 73rd wedding anniversary with George H.W. Bush on January 6, focused on literacy and civil rights causes. Barbara’s eldest son, George W. Bush, released a statement on the loss of his mother.

“My dear mother has passed on at age 92. Laura, Barbara, Jenna, and I are sad, but our souls are settled because we know hers was. Barbara Bush was a fabulous First Lady and a woman unlike any other who brought levity, love, and literacy to millions. To us, she was so much more. Mom kept us on our toes and kept us laughing until the end. I’m a lucky man that Barbara Bush was my mother. Our family will miss her dearly, and we thank you all for your prayers and good wishes.”

Barbara is survived by her husband, five children, 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Barbara’s funeral service is scheduled for Saturday at the St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston.
