A gunman barricaded himself inside an apartment after shooting two family members, one fatally, early Monday on Chicago’s South Side, according to police.

Authorities said the incident, which prompted a SWAT team response, took place at around 1:30 a.m. in the 7000 block of South Prairie Avenue in the city’s Park Manor neighborhood.

Officers responding to a call of a disturbance inside a second-floor apartment building, discovered a 39-year-old woman inside the stairwell of a building with a gunshot wound to the face, according to police.

Authorities, who later identified her as Valoria Taylor, said she was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in stable condition, officials said.

Taylor told police that a man had fired shots and then barricaded himself while she was inside her apartment.

Officers later found an 89-year-old woman with a gunshot wound, according to police, who said she was pronounced dead at the scene after engaging in a hostage situation.

Authorities later confirmed that the victim was Taylors’ grandmother.

A SWAT team was on the scene for about 4 hours, according to police, who said the incident appeared to be domestic in nature.

At around 8 a.m., authorities said a 19-year-old man was taken into custody in connection with the shootings and taken to St. Bernard Hospital.
