Chicago police on Friday pointed to a recent increase in crime in the city’s Albany Park neighborhood, one day after a teenage boy was shot in the head while being driven home by his mother from a high school dance.

The 14-year-old boy was in the backseat, along with his 9-year-old brother, when another vehicle approached and someone inside fired shots in the 4800 block of North Central Park Avenue, Chicago police said.

The shooting happened blocks away from Von Steuben Metropolitan High School, where the dance took place. Following the incident, Chicago police held their roll call in the area Friday night.

Chicago Police Dept. 7th District Commander Ron Pontecore told NBC 5 there has been an “uptick in violence” in the past couple days.

“This is a problem that has really deep roots, and there are a lot of approaches,” said 33rd Ward Alderman Rossana Rodriguez.

In a letter about the incident to students and parents, the principal of Von Steuben said crisis support will be available when school resumes on Tuesday. Police and school security plan to have an increased presence in the area while the investigation continues.
