A man was found dead at Westfield Old Orchard Mall in north suburban Skokie on Saturday, according to police.

Around 1:33 p.m., a mall employee called 911 to report an “unresponsive male,” Skokie Police Department spokesman Eric Swaback said at a news conference Saturday afternoon.

The man “was found bleeding from his head on the ground in one of the parking structure stairwells,” Swaback said.

Emergency personnel from the Skokie Police and Fire Departments responded to the mall, located in the 4900 block of Old Orchard Road.

There they located the man, believed to possibly be in his 20s or 30s, on the fifth floor of a stairwell, according to police, who said he was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s could not immediately confirm the fatality. Further details, including the man’s identity, were not available.

Police did not have a timeline or information on how long the body had been in the stairwell, and detectives and evidence technicians remained at the mall for several hours.

The area of the parking structure where the body was found was closed to the public as authorities continued to process the scene, though the mall itself was open, Swaback said.

Skokie police opened a death investigation, which remains ongoing.

The North Regional Major Crimes Task Force is assisting in the investigation, according to a release from Skokie police.

Based on preliminary information, authorities said they do not believe there is a threat to the public.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact police at (847) 982-5900 or text the 24-hour Skokie Crime Tip Hotline at 847/933-TIPS (8477).
