A man police believed was armed with a handgun surrendered after a SWAT team surrounded the west suburban home he was holed up in Wednesday evening, authorities confirmed.

Villa Park detectives were investigating two incidents in the 900 block of West North Avenue in the DuPage County suburb—including the unlawful discharge of a firearm Wednesday and a robbery last month, police said.

About 3 p.m. detectives located a “person of interest” involved in the two incidents at a residence in the 200 block of East Plymouth. The person was also wanted on a warrant issued by the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, police said. It was not clear what the warrant was for.

The man refused to leave the residence when police made contact with them, according to officials. The Northern Illinois Police Alarm System, a joint response force made up of officers from different suburban departments, deployed at the scene due to concern the barricaded person was armed with a handgun, police said.

A heavy police presence—including officers donning tactical garb and carrying rifles—was visible in the tree-lined neighborhood.

“The subject continued a stand-off and refused to exit the residence after being advised he was under arrest,” a news release from Villa Park police reads.

At one point, several officers in olive tactical gear and helmets appeared to keep a watchful on the entrance of a single-floor home from behind a red sedan. A child’s red and yellow plastic toy car sat motionless on the front lawn of the residence.

The man later surrendered to officers and was taken into custody unharmed, police said.

Detectives then served a search warrant on the residence and recovered a handgun and ammunition, police said.

The investigation was ongoing Wednesday night.
