Three people were injured after a family was held at gunpoint during a home invasion in Tinley Park Saturday night.

The robbery occurred in the 8000 block of Pottawatomi Trail in Tinley Park just before midnight, police said. Three men entered the house through an open garage door while the family was hosting a sleepover inside.

“We’ve never had anything like that happen in the area,” neighbor Tom Medo said. “Maybe east of here, but never around here.”

After the robbers entered the home, they held the family and their guests at gunpoint, while they stole cell phones, wallets, and other electronics from the victims. They then locked the victims in the basement of the home before leaving.

“It’s very scary to think that this could happen to someone you know, right down the street from where you feel safe,” neighbor Donna Van Dyke said.

Van Dyke knows the victims, and said that she spoke with them on Sunday morning.

“They’re very shaken up,” she said. “It’s scary stuff.”

According to police, three of the victims had to be treated at area hospitals for minor injuries after the robbery. Officers were going door-to-door in the neighborhood on Sunday morning, looking for surveillance footage of the three men.

Police said that they’re looking for three men in connection with the incident, whose ages range from 18-to-25 years old.

Police said that it’s unclear whether the victims were specifically targeted, but neighbors are taking the robbery as a wake-up call.

“We will definitely make sure we don’t leave the garage open and lock our doors more,” Van Dyke said. “We have an alarm, (and) we’ll make sure we set it every day.”
