A 9-year-old boy was located safely Saturday hours after being reported missing in Hammond, Indiana.

Police said Anthony Mitchell, who has a cognitive disability, left his residence in the 100 block of Ruth Street in Hammond at approximately 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

He was found hiding in a bush in a nearby area, Hammond police said Saturday evening, after officers deployed K-9 units and a sheriff’s helicopter in an effort to locate him.

Several volunteers joined the search party, Hammond police said in a statement, thanking the community for their work on a rainy evening.

“It is truly inspiring to see how the residents from Hammond and Calumet City came together with law enforcement for a common goal,” Lt. Steven Kellogg said. “It really is the true meaning of community. We are proud to serve to you all.”
