Speaking at Apple’s highly anticipated product unveiling today, Angela Ahrendts, the company’s retail guru, said the new Chicago flagship along the Chicago River will open Oct. 20.

The $62 million retail temple, which is expected to change the face of Michigan Avenue and alter ingrained patterns of shopping traffic, has been under tight wraps since construction began last year.

Under Ahrendts, formerly CEO of Burberry, Apple has begun reinvigorating its already phenomenally successful store fleet. At today’s event in Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, Calif., where the company showed off redesigned iPhones and an upgraded Apple Watch, Ahrendts also explained the new retail concept. Chicago will be the first of five new flagships around the globe.

The company intends the stores to be “town squares,” or open places where creative professionals can gather. In addition to the new Chicago flagship, Apple is redoing and expanding its iconic New York glass cube store on Fifth Avenue and opening stores in a historic Paris building on the Champs-Elysees, the Carnegie Library in Washington, D.C., and a location in Milan.
