The Chicago Cubs are close to clinching their second straight Central Division title, as their magic number sits at one heading into their game in St. Louis Tuesday.

With one more win or one more Milwaukee Brewers loss, the Cubs will punch their ticket into the postseason, becoming the fourth National League team to clinch a spot.

The team they will play once they get there is up in the air. The Cubs would lock up the third seed in the NL playoffs if they clinch the division, and would open the playoffs against either the Washington Nationals or Los Angeles Dodgers.

As things stand Tuesday, the Dodgers’ magic number to clinch the top seed in the NL stands at two. If they seal that spot, then the Cubs will open the playoffs next week in Washington against the Nationals.

If the Nationals somehow chase down and tie the Dodgers in the standings, the Cubs would play Los Angeles, as Washington owns the tiebreaker between the teams thanks to their superior intradivisional record.

The Cubs can find out their playoff opponent as soon as Tuesday night, as a Washington loss to Philadelphia and a Los Angeles win over San Diego would lock up home field advantage for the Dodgers.
