While Saturday’s warm weather is welcome news for many area residents, there are plenty of problems being caused by the rising temperatures.

The big thaw is causing big problems outside and inside of homes and businesses across the area, including in Des Plaines, where a water main break on River Road caused the street to be shutdown for several hours on Saturday morning as crews tried to clean up the mess.

Other area residents are having to deal with problems closer to home as well, including several Des Plaines residents who say that they had pipes burst because of the fluctuating temperatures.

Melting snow from rooftops is also causing problems, leaking water into homes and forcing families to clean up rather than enjoying the warm weather.

Experts recommend that homeowners, when possible, use a rake to get snow off of their roof to help prevent potential damage as ice and snow shift around during the warm-up. Homeowners can also throw a bit of salt near their gutters to try to prevent ice dams.

Homeowners are also advised to be cautious when starting to use pipes and faucets again in their homes.
