Most of the Chicago area avoided significant icing during Tuesday night’s first Ice Storm Warning in a decade, but the roller-coaster weather forecast doesn’t end there.

A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect for Lake, McHenry, Kane and DeKalb counties at 6 p.m. Wednesday and runs until 3 a.m., warning of a period of light icy mixed precipitation that could produce up to a tenth of an inch of ice.

Light rain is expected to develop across the area overnight, then conditions turn overcast and more continuously rainy on Thursday.

A few unseasonable thunderstorms are possible Thursday morning as the day turns windy and milder. High temperatures are expected to range from the upper 30s in northwest counties to the low 50s in northwest Indiana before quickly falling late Thursday afternoon and evening.

Rain may mix with or change to snow showers late Thursday afternoon and evening as it turns sharply colder, but little to no accumulation is expected.

Friday looks partly sunny, breezy and much colder with highs in the teens. Lake-effect snow showers will be possible east in the Michiana snow belts.

While Saturday stays mostly sunny and cold in the low to mid 20s, we could see light snow Sunday afternoon and evening.

The next chance for snow could come late Tuesday.
