An NBC 5 photojournalist shot video of a Coyote on the prowl in Lincoln Park Tuesday night.

Experts say it’s likely you will see more of them and it’s important to know what to do if you have a close encounter.

Dwain Adams, a doorman in the North Side neighborhood, saw the coyote for himself.

“First I thought it was a dog, because most animals are supposed to be leashed,” he said. “So, I got a good look and I found out it wasn’t.”

A NBC 5 viewer also captured images of a coyote around 7 a.m. on Sunday heading south on Dearborn Street near Clark Street.

Experts say it’s whelping and mating season.

With more than 1,500 coyotes living in Cook County, officials say they are looking for small animals to prey on which include rodents, rabbits and if you’re not careful your pets.

“I had no idea,” said dog owner Jenny Kleinow. “I take him on a lot of walks. Maybe because it’s during the day we don’t see them.”

But they are being seen during the day as well and are extremely intelligent animals and can even pick up patterns.

If you see a coyote, experts warn that you should not approach it.

Keep your pets on a tight leash throughout the coyote mating season, coyote experts say. Also, don’t leave them in yards unsupervised. Coyotes can even scale high fences.
