A newborn baby was found in a dumpster on Chicago’s West Side after a pedestrian heard the infant crying inside the trash receptacle, authorities said.

The baby was found in the 1700 block of North Keystone Avenue about 4 p.m. in the Hermosa neighborhood, Chicago fire officials said. It was taken to Norwegian Norwegian American Hospital in critical condition where it was then transported to Lurie Children’s Hospital for treatment.

Officials were unsure how long the baby was in the dumpster.

No other information was immediately available.
