One person was shot and killed during a police-involved shooting as officers and SWAT responded to a barricade situation near the University of Chicago late Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Police confirmed officers were called to the 1300 block of East 61st Street on the city’s South Side by a man who said his son, who was bipolar, was “distraught” and armed with a gun. Officers at the scene attempted to negotiate, but heard as many as six shots fired, according to Lt. Ozzie Valdez.

That’s when SWAT was called to the scene, according to authorities. Once there, SWAT officer also tried to negotiate with the armed man, but were “confronted” by him.

Two officers fired shots at the scene.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said one offender was shot in a police-involved shooting. The person was taken to University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead, Valdez said. It remained unclear if anyone else was injured in the gunfire.

Valdez said police were still canvassing the area.

Several streets remained blocked due to the incident.
