Sunny skies greeted residents when they rolled out of bed on Sunday, but that soon changed for some as showers and thunderstorms were expected to develop later in the day.

Rain early Sunday paved way to mostly clear skies through the noon hour as Chicago warmed into the low 80s, but southerly winds provided an influx of moisture that was expected to help fire up some afternoon showers and thunderstorms, especially in northwest Indiana.

The likelihood for rain and storms was set to increase into the evening hours, and some thunderstorms could even be severe, as the area is under a “marginal” risk for severe weather Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

Gusty winds, hail, and frequent lightning are possible with the storms, and residents are advised to be cautious outdoors if storms begin to fire.

As the area approaches the overnight hours the chance of rain will subside, though for some northern suburbs heavy rain is expected. More rain is on the way for the start of the work week as Monday will likely see showers during the morning rush hour commute. Temperatures are likely to rise once again, topping the low 80s for most area residents.
