Three suspects are in custody and a  23-mile stretch of the Indiana Toll Road was closed for several hours after a police chase Wednesday afternoon.

According to Indiana State Police, the Valparaiso Police Department received a call of three men that were trying to break into cars at approximately 2 p.m.

Half an hour later, a police officer saw a vehicle that matched the description of the suspects’ car, and when he attempted to pull the car over, it fled northbound on Calumet Avenue.

The car entered the Indiana Toll Road at the Valparaiso exit at mile marker 31 and continued driving west before crashing near mile marker 27, police said.

The suspects got out of the car and fled into a wood area, and state troopers and Valparaiso police tried to search for the suspects.

Two of the suspects were taken into custody, but a third evaded capture and was seen running on the toll road a short time later.

That man allegedly tried stealing a maintenance worker’s truck, but the worker confronted him, grabbing him by the shirt.

The suspect then put the truck into reverse and crashed into a semi truck, police said. As the suspect backed up, he drove toward a maintenance worker and several police officers, who opened fire.

The suspect then tried to flee the scene, but crashed into another semi truck. He then got out of the vehicle and fled the scene on foot, but he was eventually arrested.

That suspect is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Traffic was kept off a 23-mile stretch of the westbound highway for several hours after the incident, but has since re-opened to vehicles.
