Authorities responded to reports of an officer being shot in the South Side Saturday morning.

The incident took place around 8:40 a.m., police said, in the 6500 block of South Winchester Avenue.

According to CPD spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, the “alleged shooter is believed to be a fugitive wanted by police.”

Locals are being told to avoid the area as emergency units respond, Guglielmi tweeted.

The officer was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, and officials told NBC 5 that he was completing surgery around 10:50 a.m.

Guglielmi said the offender is “considered armed and dangerous.” The U.S. Marshals Service along with ATF were conducting the search for the gunman, he said.
