A Freeze Warning will soon take effect for several Chicago-area counties as temperatures are set to dip below freezing in some locations.

The warning takes effect at 2 a.m. Saturday for LaSalle, McHenry, DeKalb, Kane and Kendall counties and remains in effect until 9 a.m.

The cold weather sent temperatures on a steady but dramatic drop from the 60s Friday morning to the 30s by the evening.

Temperatures under the Freeze Warning are expected to reach sub-freezing lows, dipping into the upper-20s and low-30s, which could kill uncovered sensitive plants and vegetation outside, the alert warns.

Temperature highs Saturday sit in the upper-40s and near 50 degrees, though a windy and chilly afternoon will make it feel colder.

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon will likely see temperatures in the upper-30s and low-40s at the time of the race’s start, with wind chill readings near 32 degrees.

The day should warm into the low- to mid-50s by the afternoon with a partly sunny and less windy day in store.

With the onset of the much colder temperatures and a second winter storm hitting northern portions of the country, NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologist Andy Avalos says this is either a fake out, or a sign that the area could be in for a harsh winter.
