Congressman Elijah Cummings of Baltimore, Maryland, died early Thursday morning at Johns Hopkins Hospital due to complications from “longstanding health challenges,” his office confirmed in a statement. He was 68.
Cummings, a Democrat, represented Maryland’s 7th congressional district for over two decades and had served as the chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform since January. He was a key figure in the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.
The congressman recently underwent an undisclosed medical procedure and previously had been treated for heart and knee issues.
