The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago has reinstated a priest after state officials determined allegations of abuse were unfounded.

Rev. William MacFarlane was asked to step aside from his roles at two South Side parishes in July after the Chicago Archdiocese learned about allegations of sexual abuse that took place decades ago.

In a letter sent to parishoners of Nativity of Our Lord and St. Gabriel Parish on Saturday, Cardinal Blase Cupich said MacFarlane was restored to active ministry, effective immediately.

Cupich said in the letter MacFarlane will take up a new assignment, which will be announced “shortly.”
